Breaking Apart an SVG Object in Cricut Design Space and Silhouette
There may be times when you have an SVG design (or part of a design) that is all one piece, but you want to break it up into multiple separate pieces. Breaking apart a design allows you to:
- Change the color for one portion of the design
- Edit a part of the design independently from the rest
- Remove holes
- Remove elements
- Modify and customize designs
If the design is grouped, sometimes all you need to do is right click and choose "Ungroup" to edit the elements separately. However if the portion you want to change is just a single object, making changes requires breaking up the compound path.
For Silhouette users, breaking apart a compound path couldn't be easier. Just right click the object and select "Release Compound Path."
For Cricut users, the process is not quite as straight-forward. There are a few ways to release the compound path in Cricut Design Space. The particular method you use will depend on the particular design, what you want to do with it, and which method you prefer. You can even combine methods as needed.
